05 September 2021 The Turin Public Prosecutor has registered a 56-year-old craftsman in the register of suspects, for the fire that broke out in two condominiums in the center of Turin, a few steps from the Porta Nuova station, between Piazza Carlo Felice and via Lagrange, with 30 apartments in smoke, five intoxicated and 100 evacuated.

Three families, left homeless, were welcomed in the affiliated hotels made available by the Municipality of Turin, while the other families found shelter in the homes of friends and relatives.

The suspect is the blacksmith who on Friday morning was installing a safe in the attic from which the fire started. The offense is a culpable fire. The investigators in the past few hours had examined his position. The man was questioned for a long time.

After the inspection by prosecutor Alessandro Aghemo, owner of the investigation, the seals were placed on the attic, which is the only apartment under seizure.

The fire destroyed 1,800 square meters in two apartment buildings. The fire would have been caused by sparks or a flame produced by a welding machine used by the blacksmith in the attic, during the welding work. A flammable insulating material would have caught fire in the cavity of the wall where the craftsman was collecting the chest. The fire immediately spread to apartments and attics on the three sides of the block consisting of two condominiums: via Lagrange, piazza Lagrange and piazza Carlo Felice.

Police, Carabinieri and Traffic Police guarded the area and the Niat nucleus (Nucleo Investigativo Antincendio) of the Fire Brigade carried out surveys and initiated investigations which confirmed that the fire started from the attic where the installation was in progress of the safe. The fire was extinguished late yesterday evening.
