Over-the-counter cannabis at Lidl?

The discounter launched a special offer in August of CBD products, which perhaps weren't all that harmless.

The prosecutor in Heilbronn, in southern Germany, opened an investigation and the distributor urged all of its customers to return the goods to the stores.

Cannabis is on the rise in Germany.

Medicinal cannabis, CBD ... The offers of cannabidiol-based products are popping up on the Internet, in night-time grocery stores and more recently even, very officially, on the shelves of the Lidl discount chain.

Too much THC

The referenced products, 21 in total, have unmistakable names such as Mary & Juana brand chocolate or cranberry and hash cookies, Tea of Mind herbal teas and Euphoria protein bars.

All are manufactured by the Czech company Euphoria Trade and distributed by the company Green Dealer.

For Lidl, the euphoria was short-lived.

The chain withdrew the entire range from its shelves two weeks ago.

The products are said to contain too much THC, the psychotropic substance in hemp, which is strictly prohibited in Germany.

Lidl, cannabis dealer?

In any case, the Heilbronn Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating.
