More than 2,000 babies were born every day in July 2021. That is to say as many as in July 2020. In its latest estimate, INSEE confirms the rise in births after a sharp drop at the beginning of the year.

A consequence of the first confinement.

The year had started very badly.

In January, there were 13% fewer babies than in January 2020. For the National Institute of Statistics, INSEE, the reason is simple.

Parents postponed or abandoned their plans to have children during the first lockdown.

In detail, INSEE explains that some parents were afraid that their baby would contract Covid.

The decline is also a consequence of the closure of assisted reproduction centers during this long period.

Births in Brittany and Occitania

Since March of this year, births have started to rise again.

Sign that once the confinement is over, the couples have again decided to expand their families.

But there are differences between regions.

For the moment, only Brittany and Occitania have more births than in 2020.

And even if we return to the level of last year, the number of births has been steadily decreasing for 10 years.
