Local sources reported to Al-Jazeera that the neighborhoods of Daraa Al-Balad in southern Syria are witnessing a cautious calm after the Negotiations Committee on behalf of the people announced yesterday the collapse of negotiations with the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The Negotiations Committee on behalf of the people of Daraa said - in a statement to Al Jazeera - that it had asked the Russian side to secure a mass displacement of the people of Daraa Al-Balad to Turkey or Jordan, due to the regime's violation of the agreement signed with them 3 days ago.

The committee added that it briefed the office of the UN envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen on the latest developments in the city of Daraa with the regime and the Russian side.

She explained that the people of Daraa sent a letter of appeal to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, calling for the international community to intervene to protect more than 50,000 civilians whose lives are threatened by the Syrian regime and the forces loyal to it.

Earlier yesterday, the committee accused the Syrian regime of overturning the agreement signed under the auspices of Russia, adding that it sent a letter appealing to the Secretary-General of the United Nations to protect civilians in the besieged neighborhoods of the city.

The negotiating committee also made it clear that it had asked the Russian side to secure a collective exit for the people of Daraa to Turkey or Jordan.

This comes after Adnan al-Masalma, spokesman for the Daraa Tribal Council, confirmed on his Facebook account the failure of negotiations with the Syrian regime delegation regarding the second phase of the ceasefire agreement in the city of Daraa.

The city of Daraa is called the cradle of the Syrian revolution after its people called for freedom and social justice in the spring of 2011, before the security forces met them with live bullets, which ignited the spark of the revolution throughout the Syrian cities.
