Human rights organizations have warned of an impending humanitarian catastrophe as Afghans flee the new Taliban regime, which has enacted sharia law.

"It is not known now which legislation to follow because the Taliban have declared that the previous legislation and the constitution no longer apply," says Helene Lackenbauer, Afghanistan expert at the Swedish Defense Research Agency, FOI.

According to Lackenbauer, the Taliban have begun to implement their policies, which are largely based on separating men and women.

Taliban moral police are patrolling several parts of the country, and women are increasingly being forced to cover themselves completely.

- Women have been urged to sit at home waiting for security to improve, as the Taliban puts it. For Afghan women, it is uncertain whether they will ever be able to return to work.
