The heir to the Russian throne,
Georgy Romanov, a
descendant of the last Tsar,
Nicholas II,
will marry on October 1 at
St. Isaak's
Cathedral
in
St. Petersburg.
As reported today by the press office of the cathedral, Gueorgui, the only son of
María Romanova,
head of the
Russian Imperial House, will
marry the Italian citizen
Rebecca Bettarini.
The temple, which today has become one of the most visited museums in the former Tsarist capital, regularly hosts religious services and weddings.
The only requirement for foreigners is that they profess the Orthodox faith, to which Bettarini became in July 2020 under the name
Victoria Romanova
and received an icon from Metropolitan
Varsonofi.
Gueorgui, 40, is a descendant of Nicholas II by the mother and son of
Francisco Guillermo de Prusia,
belonging to the
Hohenzollern
dynasty
.
Known as the
Grand Duke of Russia, he was
born in Madrid, like his mother, who maintains a close relationship with the Spanish monarchy.
At the time, María Romanova told Efe that both she and her son consider "that the monarchical idea has a future," she advocated for the recognition of the Romanov dynasty as a historical institution in
Russia,
but denied ambitions for power. Coinciding with the centenary of the abdication of Nicholas II in March 2017, he assured that Russian President
Vladimir Putin
is not against the monarchy, but that they both agree that neither now nor "in the near future" will the conditions for its restoration.
Russia, which was ruled by the Romanovs for
more than 300 years (1613-1917),
ceased to be a monarchy when Nicholas II abdicated on March 2, 1917 after the
February Revolution.
The Tsar, his wife, and their five children
were shot in July 1918
after the Bolsheviks came to power in the
October Revolution, a
crime that a majority of Russians consider "monstrous."
