Spain and the Canary Islands have seen an increase in the number of migrants trying to reach the islands in the Atlantic.

According to authorities, this is a doubling compared to the same period a year ago.

Between 1 January and 15 August, just over 8,000 migrants made their way to the Canary Islands, compared with just over 3,000 in the corresponding period last year.

However, the full-year figure for the number of migrants to the Canary Islands last year rose to over 23,000 people.
