Three judicial associations have requested this Wednesday a meeting with the European Commissioner of Justice to press for a change in the election system of the CGPJ.

In the meeting with the Belgian

Didier Reynders they will

insist on their desire that 12 of the 20 members that make it up be chosen directly by the judges, instead of by the Courts, as is currently the case.

The meeting has been jointly requested by the majority

Professional Association of the Magistracy

(APM), the

Francisco de Vitoria Judicial Association

(AJFV) -second in representation among the associated judges-, and by

the Independent Judicial Forum

(FJI).

In their letter, the associations highlight that this claim has already been demanded by the

Council of Europe

through the

Group of States against Corruption

(Greco), the

European Commission

, the

European Court of Human Rights

in Strasbourg in recent judgments and "the own Spanish citizens ", according to their responses to the Eurobarometer.

The only judicial association that has not requested the meeting has been the progressive

Judges and Judges for Democracy

(JJpD), of a progressive nature and closer in this area to the Government's position, giving priority to the renewal of the Council over the reform of the election system.

Third speech

The request comes a few days after the act that symbolically starts the judicial process.

Next Monday, in the Supreme Court, the solemn act of opening of the judicial year will be held, presided over by the King.

A speech will be given by the State Attorney General, Dolores Delgado, and, above all, the president of the CGPJ.

Carlos Lesmes will once again demand from the parties the renewal of the governing body of the judges, as he has done in the previous two years, when he delivered the opening speech with the Council after the renewal period.

Last year he described as "it would be an anomaly" the lack of a renovation that should have taken place at the end of 2018, and urged the parties - Pablo Casado and the then Minister of Justice Juan Carlos Campo were present - "to renew the institution without greater delays. "

The difference this year is that the legal reform that prevents the Council from continuing to make appointments has been approved, which has meant a growth in vacancies in the Supreme Court that is affecting the ordinary operation, mainly in the Contentious-Administrative chamber.
