The City of Malmö is now investigating the cause of bird deaths and has sent several bird bodies for analysis and autopsy to the Swedish Veterinary Institute, SVA.

- We are investigating whether the birds may have been affected by a disease, if, for example, it may be the bird flu again.

We have sent birds to SVA and are waiting for an autopsy response from there, says Anna Hallengren, ecologist at the real estate and street office in Malmö.

Dams and canals are sampled

The city of Malmö has added more aeration and pumping of the waters in the areas to try to improve the water quality for the birds.

- We are also investigating whether it has to do with water quality, whether there have been discharges or algae toxins have formed that may have poisoned the birds.

However, our measurements have not shown any elevated values, says Anna Hallengren.

May have been poisoned

The city of Malmö works on the basis of several theories and does not rule out that the birds may have been poisoned by some malicious person.

- The birds have been found in a relatively isolated area, in Slottsparken, the canal and in certain parts of Pildammsparken in Malmö, says Anna Hallengren.

Blood lice in the eyes

But so far no one has revealed what it is because the birds in Malmö fell ill and died on a large scale this summer.

- However, we have discovered that many birds have leeches in their eyes, among other things.

What can it indicate?

- It is difficult to predict.

It can be a parasite, an infection or another disease, says Anna Hallengren, ecologist at the real estate and street office in Malmö.

- At the moment I can not give any other information, she adds.
