This autumn's first budget proposal from Minister of Finance Magdalena Andersson was about taxes.

Despite recurring social democratic rhetoric that tax cuts erode welfare, the government still chose to propose reduced taxes.

However, the profile is different than when it comes to, for example, employment tax deductions.

Those who benefit most this time are those who have so-called sickness and activity compensation.

But also low- and middle-income earners and those who are part of the unemployment insurance fund receive a tax reduction.

Minister of Finance Magdalena Andersson says that it is important to stimulate the economy in the pandemic aftermath with a reduced tax.

The purpose is to create more jobs.

And here the government needs to achieve results.

Sweden has the EU's fourth highest unemployment rate and also a very high long-term unemployment rate.

Learn to be seen by the opposition

The question, however, is whether today's tax cuts are the most effective method of reducing unemployment.

Here, the opposition will focus its criticism in the coming weeks.

Another explanation for today's proposal is that the tax cuts now presented are tailored for the Center Party and the Left Party, the two parties the government is completely dependent on to survive the autumn.

If these parties do not vote yes to the government's budget, a new government crisis is on the doorstep and favorite Magdalena Andersson can have major problems being appointed prime minister.

Both the Left Party and the Center Party were cautiously positive after today's proposal from the government.

The Left Party has long called for reduced taxes for people with sickness and activity compensation, the Center Party would like to see reduced taxes for low- and middle-income earners.

The wishes of both parties were fulfilled today.

Hard to appease both C and V.

But that does not mean that they are committed to supporting the government's budget.

It is only decided when the whole is presented and it does not happen until 20 September when the budget bill is placed on the government's table.

Despite the positive signals today from C and V, it is still difficult to see that the government can present a budget that both parties can accept.

In economic policy, C and V are often political opposites.

At the same time, the situation is complicated ahead of this autumn's budget process.

Without C and V supporting the government's budget, the Moderates' budget motion is said to be voted through with the support of the Christian Democrats and the Sweden Democrats.

The question is whether the Left Party indirectly wants to participate in this.

Is about more than the budget

This outcome would also be devastating for the government.

In such a situation, Magdalena Andersson would have a hard time becoming Prime Minister.

And we know from last summer that M-leader Ulf Kristersson with today's distribution of seats in the Riksdag can not become Prime Minister.

This autumn's budget discussion is thus about more than the budget itself, it was also about the government's survival and Magdalena Andersson's opportunities to succeed Stefan Löfven as Prime Minister.

Much of the government's budget focus will thus be focused on satisfying wishes from the Left Party and the Center Party, which has been confirmed with today's tax proposal.

The aim now is to win the support of these parties.

Magdalena Andersson's charm offensive has begun.
