August 30, 2021: Hurricane Ida plunges New Orleans into darkness. The entire Jefferson County, in the New Orleans metropolitan area, ran out of electricity as the eye of the storm approached. Throughout Louisiana, over 700,000 users are left without electricity. According to local media reports, a person died from a fallen tree due to winds and heavy rains.

The center of Hurricane Ida is now located approximately 30 miles west of New Orleans. The cyclone, which has weakened slightly, has now been downgraded to category 2, continues to move through southern Louisiana with very heavy rains that are causing vast floods and countless damage, which will only be seen in the next few hours.

The governor of Louisiana, John Bel Edwards, interviewed by CNN, admitted that he was aware of the multiple requests for help that continue to come mainly from Jefferson County, where an evacuation obligation was issued last Thursday, but also supported that conditions still do not allow emergency teams to respond. "At the height of a hurricane it is not possible to bring first responders out because it is simply too dangerous," he noted.

21 urban search and rescue teams are ready to mobilize as soon as the hurricane subsides, he promised. The governor, however, warned that the storm is far from over: "the full extent of the damage cannot be quantified until the sun rises".
