The U.S. has again failed to draw conclusions about the origins of COVID-19.

China, worried that the Wuhan Research Center might be pointed out as the epicenter, expressed relief and launched a massive counterattack against the United States.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to determine the origin of COVID-19.

U.S. "It wasn't developed as a biological weapon"...

'Laboratory leak rumors' not conclusive

Earlier, U.S. intelligence officials reported the results of their investigation into the origins of COVID-19 to President Biden in May.

Of the intelligence agencies that were involved in the investigation at the time, two were close to saying they came from animals, and one was close to leaking from a laboratory, but it was said that it was impossible to be sure of either possibility.

In response, President Biden ordered a re-investigation "to double the effort".

They told me to do an additional investigation for 90 days and then report back.

Finally, the results of the re-investigation were made public. However, it was not enough to meet the expectations of the people of the world. According to the short two-page summary of A4 paper posted on the website of the US National Intelligence Service (DNI), the intelligence agencies participating in the re-investigation agreed that COVID-19 was not developed as a biological weapon. However, opinions differed as to whether the coronavirus was artificially manipulated. Most of the intelligence agencies did not believe it was falsified, but two other agencies withheld judgment due to lack of information. Intelligence agencies also agreed that the Chinese government did not know about the virus until the outbreak. Even if it was leaked from a laboratory, it was not reported to the Chinese government. It is known that 18 U.S. intelligence agencies participated in the re-investigation.

The key issue, whether COVID-19 originated in animals or was leaked from the Wuhan Research Center, is still undecided. First, the National Intelligence Committee (NIC) under the National Intelligence Service and four intelligence agencies weighed the possibility that it was naturally derived from animals. But he also said he couldn't be sure. There was only one intelligence agency that said the lab leak was true. It is said that the Wuhan laboratory may have leaked the virus while extracting the virus from animals. The Wuhan Institute said it had been working with dangerous viruses in the past. The conclusions of three other intelligence agencies were mixed with theories of natural origin and laboratory leaks. Some analysts are closer to the theory of natural origin, others to the theory of laboratory runoff, and others have both possibilities in mind.

U.S. intelligence agencies cited the 'lack of early epidemiological data and clinical samples' as the cause of the unclear origin of COVID-19.

President Biden also condemned China's non-cooperation.

"Critical information is in China, but China has blocked access to this information by international investigative groups from the beginning," Biden said.

“I will not rest until I get an answer,” he said.

Chinese media "The United States took my foot… If we investigate further, the reputation of the United States will fall"

China has been paying close attention to the announcement of the results of the US re-investigation. The state media continued to report that 'the US military base's Fort Detrick laboratory and the University of North Carolina laboratory may be the epicenter of the leak'. Chinese authorities have finally called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to conduct a formal investigation into US laboratories. Based on this series of actions alone, it seemed as if China, which had been insisting on the theory of natural origin, changed its position to the theory of laboratory leaks.

Then, when the results of the US re-investigation turned out to be inconclusive, they immediately launched a counterattack. In a statement, Deputy Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoshi strongly criticized the US report, saying, "The report is completely politically false and has neither scientific merit nor credibility." This is a protest against the U.S.'s failure to completely rule out the possibility that COVID-19 originated at the Wuhan Institute. The WHO investigative team, which visited China earlier, released a report in March stating that it is very unlikely that the coronavirus originated in the Wuhan laboratory. The Chinese embassy in the United States also explained, arguing that "the United States is shifting responsibility to China in the form of 'presumption of guilt' in order to escape its responsibility for its failure to contain the virus."

Chinese state media is pouring out derisive articles about the results of the US re-investigation.

The Global Times published an article on the 30th with the title, "The United States has hit my feet with an 'unconclusive' Corona 19 origin report'. 'The investigation into the origin of COVID-19 in the United States, which started with great expectations, ended in embarrassment'. "I was trying to put mud on this China and I got myself in the foot," he said.

Additionally, while the reinvestigation report involved far more US intelligence agencies than the previous report, it was ironic that only one conclusion was close to a laboratory leak, and most leaned toward the theory of natural origin.

Zeng Guang, a senior researcher at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told the Global Times, "The US set a direction in advance and conducted an investigation to scratch China, but it was embarrassing when no evidence was found to support it."

"This inconclusive report could rather help President Biden's face," he said.

China should also investigate foreign companies that supplied frozen food to the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, which was designated as the first spread of COVID-19.

It is argued that the Corona 19 virus may have come to Wuhan from abroad through frozen food at the time.

WHO "Opportunity to determine the origin of Corona is closing... If it is delayed, it will be impossible"

As the battle between the US and China intensifies, concerns are growing that opportunities to determine the origin of COVID-19 are gradually disappearing.

The WHO investigative team published a joint contribution in the international academic journal Nature, stating that "the follow-up work necessary to confirm the origin of COVID-19 should be expedited."

"The report published in March was the first step in a process that is now halted," they said. "The window of opportunity to conduct an important investigation is rapidly closing," they said.

"If it is later, some studies will be biologically impossible," he added.

Over time, antibodies may decrease, making it difficult to investigate people who may have been exposed to the virus before December 2019, and many wildlife farms in China may also close, making it difficult to find evidence of transmission of the virus. .

The WHO team is stressing the need for further investigation, both inside and outside China.

WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus said it was still too early to rule out the leak.

If so, how was the result of the WHO investigation team derived in March?

It seems that the WHO will not be free from criticism that it has reached the first conclusion too quickly or that it has given China hasty indulgences.
