It is a real tragedy which mourns Peru.

At least eleven people have died and an unknown number went missing on Sunday after an accident between two boats on a river in the Amazon, the country's government said.

"So far there are an unknown number of missing, as well as eleven dead and six wounded," said the National Institute of Civil Protection in a statement.

Morning fog

The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. local time (12:30 p.m. in Paris) on the Huallaga River, when a boat sailing towards the town of Yurimaguas and carrying an indefinite number of passengers struck, in the middle of the morning fog, another boat carrying goods, according to information from the public channel TV Perú.

Entire families including twenty children were traveling aboard the damaged boat, according to testimonies from survivors.

At least four children managed to swim to the river bank, according to local press.
