August 30, 2021 North Korea appears to have restarted the Yongbyon reactor used for reprocessing and production of plutonium in July in a "deeply worrying" development. The IAEA, the UN's nuclear surveillance agency, also cited the release of cooling water as further evidence based on the examination of satellite images.
The annual report, presented to the agency's board of governors, includes new developments in the 5 megawatt reactor, from which the north has previously treated spent fuel rods to extract the plutonium underlying nuclear weapons.
