President Joe Biden visited Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Sunday, August 29, to pay tribute to the 13 American soldiers killed Thursday at Kabul airport in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

Under fire since the fall of Kabul to the Taliban on August 15, and even more since the airport bombing, Joe Biden, accompanied by his wife Jill, met privately upon his arrival at the base. families of soldiers killed by the explosion.

He then paid a solemn tribute to the remains of the soldiers, who arrived in the early morning on board a specially chartered plane.

The Dover military base, located on the east coast of the United States, about two hours from Washington, has for decades been synonymous in American minds with the heart-rending return of fallen servicemen, their remains covered with the American flag.

Five 20-year-old soldiers

The Pentagon published, on Saturday afternoon, the identity of the 13 soldiers killed in the attack on Thursday.

Of these, five were 20 years old, the length of the United States' longest war, launched in 2001 in Afghanistan.

On the list is the name of a 23-year-old woman who was pictured a week before her death with a baby in her arms during the chaotic evacuation operations at Kabul airport.

Thursday's attack, claimed by the Islamic State group in Khorasan (EI-K), left more than a hundred dead.

In retaliation, the United States carried out a drone strike in Afghanistan, killing two members of the Islamic State group, and warned that it would not be "the last".

Subsequently, Joe Biden had let it be known on Saturday that a new attack was "highly probable".

And while the presidential couple was with the families of the military, the Pentagon announced that it had destroyed a vehicle in Kabul, "eliminating an imminent threat from the EI-K group" against the same airport.
