Montenegrin police announced on Friday on their Twitter account a record seizure of more than one ton of cocaine in this small Adriatic country.

"The police seized 1,205 packages of cocaine in the town of Mojanovici," said the police.

Two people were arrested and police are looking for several other suspects.

The drugs were discovered in a “shipment of bananas,” Montenegrin police added without releasing further details of the operation.

A former Yugoslav republic of 620,000 inhabitants, Montenegro is considered a hub for the trafficking of cigarettes and drugs.

Local gangs are said to have direct links with criminal groups in South America, giving them a dominant position in transporting cocaine to Europe.

In April 2019, 60 kilograms of cocaine were seized from a vessel of the National Navy of Montenegro, the government said.

Three people, including two members of the army, were arrested.
