Between 28 August and 6 September, train traffic between Malmö and Lund will be at a standstill.

The Swedish Transport Administration will put two new railway bridges in place at the new commuter train station at Klostergården in Lund.

The work is part of the ongoing expansion to four tracks on the main line between Malmö and Lund.

The project started in 2017 and will be ready in 2023.

Heavy traffic section

The expansion is being done to increase the capacity of the route, which is one of Sweden's busiest with 450 trains per day.

- The number of passengers is expected to increase and we need to get more trains.

When we are ready, 650 trains will run on the route every day, says Jens-Peter Eisenschmidt, project manager at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Old railway tracks

Another reason is that the tracks are old and need to be replaced.

- The railway has been bad and needs to be upgraded.

We do not want unplanned disruptions in train traffic.

In Åkarp and Hjärup, the new railway is buried to reduce noise for those who live in the area.

- We will have three new passages in each community.

People will be able to get around more easily and not have to wait for a few barriers.

The tunnels are built next to the tracks, so that the work does not have too great an impact on train traffic.

- It would have been chaos otherwise.

We will dig out the tracks, push the tunnels into place and put the tracks back.

Then the traffic can be started again.

During the train stop, the Swedish Transport Administration encourages people to cycle.

- We try to get people to take the bike instead of the car.

It makes them more environmentally friendly at the same time as they get exercise, says Jens-Peter Eisenschmidt.
