• Health Ozone therapy in Covid: no scientific support for the option authorized by a judge

"The urgency of adopting the measure is clearly appreciated since it is established that the patient is sedated and intubated, risking his life and with a fairly negative prognosis after the treatments applied so far have not given good results." In this way, the Contentious Court number 6 of Barcelona estimates the emergency route in the request of a son to apply ozone therapy to his father admitted very seriously by covid and on which no other treatment has worked.

The patient's family brought before the court the request to apply ozone therapy since they had the endorsement of the doctor who was treating him despite the fact that both the hospital where he is admitted and the Generalitat have been against. That is why it was announced from the Department of Health that the judicial decision will be appealed because it goes against the professional criteria of doctors. It is the second case in which a court authorizes this ozone therapy treatment for a patient with covid in a very serious situation, since a few days ago a court in Valencia gave the green light to a similar request.

In the car, the judge recalls that medical reports and studies have been presented in the lawsuit that maintain that ozone therapy is a viable alternative to try to save the patient's life since "ozone therapy is being applied in other hospitals in Spain and in other countries giving very good results in seriously ill patients every time we find ourselves with a disease, covid 19, which does not have established curative treatment ". He also points out that the doctor "has the necessary equipment and resources" to administer therapy to the patient and considers it "an effective means in order to save his life."

The plaintiffs noted that the hospital's refusal to administer the therapy was in a telephone conversation.

The judge considers that the application of ozone therapy "does not appear to be detrimental to general or third party interests, and instead there is a possibility of benefit for the life" of the patient, although it will only be known when it is administered as it is. in serious danger "for" not having had any positive effect on the treatments dispensed to date in the ICU.

The Generalitat against

Faced with this judicial resolution, the Department of Health recalled that "ozone is a triatomic oxygen molecule with oxidative effect, used as a disinfectant, which is not authorized as a medicine by regulatory agencies" and added that "its use is not contemplated in the action protocols of the Catalan Health Service, based on scientific evidence. In addition, it can have side effects such as irritation from inhalation or respiratory distress, cough and phlebitis if the administration is intravenous ".

That is why they consider that "there is no evidence of its usefulness / benefit for the prevention or treatment of covid-19, and on the contrary, there are potential risks of its use and its administration or its combination with other therapies in relation to with SARS-CoV-2 infection, except in the context of controlled clinical trials. " In addition, they recall that "the application of unauthorized treatments to meet the special needs of clinical situations of specific patients with chronic or seriously debilitating diseases must have the express authorization of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS). And, in In particular, the AEMPS has already ruled categorically against the use of this product. "

For all these reasons, the Department of Health rejected the application of this ozone therapy and has been against the decision to give treatment without scientific evidence and, in addition, it considers it "an interference on the clinical evaluations of the professionals". That is why they will present allegations before the court to support the decision of the health professionals involved who rejected the request of the patient's family to administer this treatment.

The Department of Health has shown its support to the family of the patient affected by the situation "wishing for their improvement." A similar case took place recently in the Valencian Community: the controversy began when the Contentious-Administrative Court number 1 of Castellón agreed on August 13, as a very precautionary measure, that ozone therapy be applied to a patient with covid- 19 of 49 years admitted to the ICU of the Hospital de la Plana de Vila-real.

This judicial resolution unleashed the opposition of organizations of doctors and nurses, as well as the Valencian Generalitat, considering it a "serious interference" by the Administration of Justice in the health system, when ruling the application of a therapy not approved by the Agency Española del Medicamento, not included in the portfolio of services and "against scientific protocols".
