Nacho Cano

wants to build a theater in the Madrid district of Hortaleza.

The company

Malinche The Musical Spain SL

, of which the former member of the Mecano group is the sole administrator, has presented the license application for the works at the City Council of the capital, which has already begun its processing.

If the project goes ahead, the new leisure space will be built on the same municipal property where the ventriloquist and businessman José Luis Moreno planned to build the

Coliseo de las Tres Culturas

: a monumental building with three floors, capacity for 6,000 spectators. and an investment of 164 million euros in which not a single brick was placed.

Now Cano has shown interest in said parcel, fenced and in disuse for decades, which is located at

number 30 of Machupichu avenue

, one kilometer from the Ice Palace and two kilometers from the Ifema fairgrounds.

EL MUNDO has tried, without success, to contact the composer and musician's representatives to find out the details of the initiative.

The Urban Development Area of the Consistory of Madrid has not explained what the terms of the agreement would be in the event that the license for the construction of the theater is finally approved.

Those of the ill-fated project started by Moreno in 2002 included the

cession of the land for 75 years

in exchange for the payment of an annual fee and that, once that period had elapsed, the building - financed by the also television promoter - would become part of the municipal heritage.

The new project

The germ of the new attempt to use the site of Hortaleza is located in the constitution of Malinche The Musical Spain in

December 2019

, whose sole shareholder is the American firm Malinche Productions.

Its head office is located on a floor on Fernando el Santo Street, in the Chamberí district, although only a plaque from the Legal Partners International law firm hangs on its door, one of whose partners is the attorney-in-fact for the Spanish company.

Formal talks about the construction of the theater on Machupichu Avenue began

early last year

.

However, the license application was formalized this August with its publication in the Official Gazette of the Community of Madrid and the opening of the allegations period.

According to the City Council's transparency portal, the Urban Development delegate,

Mariano Fuentes

, has held two meetings to address the project. The first of them took place at the headquarters of the area on

January 8, 2020

and, among other municipal positions and businessmen, Cano himself and

David Hatchwell

, president of Excem Real Estate and attorney of Malinche The Musical Spain

attended

.

The second was produced by videoconference on

February 19 of this year

and was strictly technical.

The people in charge of the General Directorates of Building and Urban Management, Juan Carlos Álvarez and Jesús Ignacio Pascual, and the Deputy Directors General of Licenses and Municipal Land Heritage, María José Piccio and Antonio Pastor, took part in it.

The Fravm asks for an institute

In the Regional Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Madrid (Fravm) they opposed frontally from the beginning to the construction of the Coliseum of the Three Cultures and, in general, to the transfer of municipal land for commercial exploitation by a private company, in that case

Miramón Mendi

by José Luis Moreno. What they demand in this organization is that it be used for the construction of an institute for the Piovera neighborhood, where there is no public secondary school.

However, the only firm option that is currently on the table of the Consistory of Cibeles is the construction of the theater promoted by Nacho Cano.

After years away from Madrid public life,

last New Year's Eve

the artist performed at the Puerta del Sol interpreting the famous song by Mecano

One more year

- one of his compositions - in tribute to those affected by Covid-19.

Nacho Cano and Isabel Díaz Ayuso.ANDREA COMAS

Precisely inside the bell clock building, five months later, Isabel Díaz Ayuso imposed on him the

Grand Cross of the Order of the Dos de Mayo

in recognition of his professional career.

He did not hesitate to remove the red band and put it on the Madrid leader for having been "brave and a good president" for having kept cultural spaces open during the pandemic.

The fiasco of a millionaire project

The Coliseum of the Three Cultures designed by José Luis Moreno was conceived as "the new Royal Theater of Madrid" in Hortaleza.

The model designed by the Vicens & Ramos architecture studio showed an imposing 121,000-square-meter building, with two volumes and three differentiated spaces for up to 6,000 spectators, as well as an underground car park with 3,000 spaces.

The project started in 2002, with the cession of the land by the City Council, but it was not until two years later that the change of use for its construction was approved.

However, the construction of the complex with an estimated investment of 146 million euros never started.

The Consistory recovered the site in 2010 but not the eight million euro debt for the canon that the television entrepreneur did not pay either.
