Klas Friberg replaced Anders Thornberg, the current National Police Chief, in the post of Säpo chief in March 2018. After three and a half years in the post, Friberg now chooses to resign from the assignment for private reasons.

The government has now appointed Charlotte von Essen, deputy Säpo chief in recent years, as the new head of the Security Police.

This is the first time a woman has been appointed to the top post.

- Charlotte's broad experience from governing the authority and the operational management makes her very well suited to the task, says Minister of the Interior Mikael Damberg at a press conference.

Charlotte von Essen also has many professional years at the Ministry of Justice behind her.

There she started as a legal expert in 2001, became Ministerial Adviser in 2009 and Chief Justice in 2011. Charlotte von Essen will take up her new role on 1 October.
