More than a year and a half after the first Corona case in Germany, one would like to be able to say that everything is fine again.

There are now several vaccines against the virus, and a total of more than 100 million units have been injected.

But everything is far from good when it comes to Corona.

That is why the Union and the SPD voted for good reasons to extend the status of an “epidemic situation of national importance”.

This enables the government to react more quickly to new developments.

The discussions about booster vaccinations show that the republic - like the world in general - is currently far from dealing with Corona as naturally as with the much less dangerous flu. Preliminary data suggests that so-called boosters are necessary. However, there is of course a lack of long-term studies that would show who exactly should be protected against Corona and when. When the virus was new, politicians liked to say society must learn to live with Corona. This learning is a process, it is still ongoing.

Therefore, especially in light of the upcoming federal election, it is right that the government can react quickly to new pandemic developments. Unfortunately, it is also true that up to now she has often been too hesitant. But an end to the “epidemic situation” would only increase the problem.
