The shootings were more during both 2020 and 2019. This is shown by the police's statistics on confirmed shootings between 1 January and 31 July this year compared with the corresponding periods in the previous years.

But Manne Gerell, a criminologist at Malmö University who researches gang violence, does not want to describe it as the shootings have decreased.

- The last five years we have been at about the same levels, he says to SVT News.

"Obviously not enough"

This is despite the fact that very large efforts have been made by both the police, politicians and municipalities.

- What is being done has obviously not been enough, says Gerell.

At the same time, he says that the investments that have been made may have prevented an even worse development.

Franco Marin Rodriguez is a youth leader at TechTensta / Blå Huset north of Stockholm.

He describes how the deadly gun violence made both him and others blunt.

- There is a big difference when you heard about your first friend or acquaintance who passed away, you treat that grief in a completely different way.

It took a lot more emotionally, he says.

More who meet die

During the first seven months of this year, 24 people have died in connection with shootings.

It is a smaller than during the same time period last year, according to official police statistics.

2020 was also a year when the death toll from gun violence reached record highs.

Manne Gerell describes a change over time where an increase in the number of dead has been seen in connection with someone firing a weapon - at the same time as the number of injured decreases.

- If someone meets, the probability is much higher that they die now than it was a few years ago.

But I do not know what it is due to or how to explain it, says Gerell.

SVT Nyheter has contacted the police for an interview about the shooting statistics, but the authority refuses to answer questions.
