  Nicholas Burns, 65, was born in New York State. He is currently a professor of diplomacy and international relations at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and a senior adviser to American think tanks such as the Aspen Institute.

Burns is a senior diplomat with more than 25 years of diplomatic experience. He has served as a spokesperson for the US State Department, ambassador to Greece, and permanent representative to NATO.
