21 August 2021 The number of refugees arriving in Italy from Afghanistan thanks to the airlift continues to grow.

Since last June, when 228 people were brought to our country with the Aquila 1 operation, more than 1,500 Afghan citizens have been rescued and about 1,000 have been transferred to Italy in recent days.

Between yesterday evening and today, two Air Force flights landed at Fiumicino with a total of 298 people on board coming from Kabul via Kuwait.

Among them, many children and women fleeing the Taliban regime.

While waiting to define the border procedures relating to entry into the national territory, the agents welcomed the children by distributing hats, albums and colored pencils. A "thank you" for the work and the sensitivity shown came from Unicef.

Today, the Ministry of Defense informs, an additional 3 C130s will reach Kabul to evacuate other Afghan citizens. The Defense fielded 8 aircraft for the Aquila Omnia operation: four KC767s that alternate between the area of operation and Italy and four C130Js, the latter located in Kuwait, from which the airlift to Kabul departs.

Once they arrive in Italy, the refugees are transferred to the territory. 80, including 33 women, mostly collaborators of Italian companies and the Italian embassy in Kabul with their families, arrived in South Tyrol.

Refugees are hosted in the army logistic base in Colle Isarco, already used for the covid emergency. After the ten-day quarantine period, families will begin a process of integration.

"I am happy to be in Italy - says a refugee -, I thank the Italian armed forces and the Italian people who have not left us in these days, in these difficult times. They have taken us away, I am happy to be here after a long journey almost two days. We are tired but happy ".

Other family groups have been transferred in recent days to Milan and today to Edolo, in the province of Brescia, where each of them was given an envelope with toys for children and water.

The plan prepared includes groups in Tuscany, in Liguria in Sanremo and in Veneto in Padua and in Piazzola sul Brenta. According to a NATO official, a total of 12,000 foreigners and Afghans working for embassies and international aid groups have been evacuated from Afghanistan since the Taliban entered the capital Kabul last Sunday.
