20 August 2021 After a year of hiatus due to the pandemic, the Karlovy Vary International Festival (Czech Republic) is back, the largest film festival in Central-Eastern Europe now in its 55th edition.



On the opening night, the British actor Michael Caine was honored with an award for his outstanding contribution to world cinema. Caine won two Oscars for Supporting Actor with "Hannah and Her Sisters" (1987) and "The Cider House Rules" (2000). The actor will also present "Best Sellers" (2021), his most recent performance. Other international guests include actor, director and writer Ethan Hawke and actor Johnny Depp.



The out-of-competition festival "Zátopek" opens, directed by David Ondříček, biopic of the legendary Czechoslovakian athlete, four times Olympic gold medalist in 1948 and 1952, played by Václav Neužil.



There are 12 films competing for the Crystal Globe, including the Italian "La terra dei figli", by Claudio Cupellini, from the comic by Gipi of the same name. In the international jury, the Danish director Eva Mulvad, the Polish actress Marta Nieradkiewicz, the Greek director Christos Nikou and the German critic Christoph Terhechte.



There are also 12 films competing in the second competitive section of the review, "East of the West".



The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will end on August 28th.
