Sweden has a goal that by 2023, 75 percent of all food waste will be biofertilizer and biogas.

The municipality of Södertälje has been collecting food waste since 2001, but recently it has been noticed that more and more people end up in bags that are not food waste.

- As some bags look right now, it is not possible to make biofertilizer and biogas from the waste because the bags are also used for other waste, says Maria Brus Lundell, Telge Återvinning.

Want to break bad trend

In an attempt to break the trend, it has been decided in November to replace the green plastic bag used today with a paper bag.

- We need a product that does not attract to put other things in, says Maria Brus Lundell, head of production and distribution at Telge Recycling.

A change was already planned for 2023, but the municipality has decided to bring forward the shift.

In the clip, Maria Brus Lundell talks about why the plastic bag itself is bad for the environment - no matter what is put in it.
