CSU boss Markus Söder has directed allegations against the German government and the EU in connection with the situation in Afghanistan.

"Overall, the federal government does not give a strong picture in this situation," said Söder on Thursday after a meeting of the CSU party presidium in Munich.

For its part, the EU is largely “speechless”.

There are attempts at mutual accusations between the Foreign Office, secret service organizations and other ministries, said Söder.

"We do not believe that this gives a particularly sovereign external effect if the German federal government gives the impression that questions of jurisdiction are being discussed in retrospect," said the CSU boss.

"That is not enough!

It is not enough just to say: 'Sorry, we miscalculated.' "

Against the resignation of Foreign Minister Maas

But he does not believe in calls for resignation, said Söder.

"We assume that the majority of those affected and those under discussion will no longer be available for new official duties after the election, at least we would also urge that this be the case." He added with a view to Heiko Maas (SPD) adds: "Especially as far as the Foreign Minister is concerned."

Overall, Afghanistan is the biggest setback for Western efforts in the world since Vietnam, said Söder.

"The results in Afghanistan are a heavy defeat for the West," said the CSU leader.

A common European position is now also needed quickly.

The EU is currently speechless, especially when it comes to looking ahead.

Söder demanded that the question of possible refugee movements from Afghanistan be kept out of the federal election campaign. "We will not do it as the CSU," he emphasized. It is a matter of generously funding the UN refugee agency UNHCR to support Afghanistan's neighbors in particular, so as not to repeat the mistakes made in the Syria crisis in 2015. It must also be clear that the USA must bear the main responsibility - the decision to rush troop withdrawal was made there.
