PARIS (Reuters) - French firefighters struggled overnight to contain a forest fire in the hills near the coastal town of Saint-Tropez, a local official said yesterday.

An official in the local administration in the southern French province of Var, where the fire broke out on Monday, said the fires were still burning until the early hours of yesterday morning.

French President Emmanuel Macron left his nearby summer resort on Tuesday to thank firefighters for their efforts.

Severe weather waves have swept large parts of the Mediterranean region in the past few weeks, as forest fires from Spain and Greece to Turkey raise questions about climate change in the world, and the extent of countries' preparedness to confront it.

French authorities urged residents to stay away from the fire, which broke out in the village of Junfaro, about 50 kilometers west of the town of Saint-Tropez in the Riviera region, as well as locations closer to the coast, including La Croix Valmer and Grimaud.

Aircraft carrying water and 900 firefighters are trying to put out the blaze, which started late Monday.

The office of the mayor of Var said that the fire has destroyed 12,350 acres so far.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmannan said he would visit Gonfaro, adding that any reinforcements needed would be sent.
