August 18, 2021 - The United States will begin broadly distributing third doses of the covid vaccine next month, starting September 20. This was announced by the US health authorities.

"The available data clearly shows that protection against coronavirus infection decreases with time, and coinciding with the Delta variant, we begin to see reduced protection against mild and moderate disease. We have concluded that a recall is necessary. to maximize vaccine protection and extend its shelf life, "reads a statement.

The note is signed by the director of the Centers for Disease Prevention (CDC), Rochelle Wakensky, and the head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Janet Woodcock.

The inoculation of the third dose of Pfizer or Moderna, it is explained, will therefore have to be carried out eight months after the second.

For those who have received the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine, a booster will probably also be expected, but the CDCs said they were awaiting further data.

In the Cdc and Fda statement, it was stated that it is "very clear" that vaccine protection against infection decreases over time and that, with the Delta variant spreading rapidly, "we are starting to see evidence of reduced protection. against mild and moderate disease ". They continue: "Based on our latest assessment, current protection against serious illness, hospitalization and death may decline in the coming months."

The Food and Drug Administration, the US drug agency, last week authorized the booster dose for people with compromised immune systems. According to the plan that will be presented by the administration today, the booster dose will be the first to the elderly hospitalized in nursing homes, the over 65s and healthcare personnel. Followed by the rest of the population already vaccinated.
