Militant Islamists have killed at least 47 people, including 30 civilians, 14 soldiers and three pro-government militants, in an attack in northern Burkina Faso on Wednesday, state media reported.

State media further state that government forces killed 16 jihadists in subsequent fighting, while a security source states the number of jihadists killed was at least 58.

The jihadist attack took place near the northern city of Arbinda.

The area borders Mali and Niger and is heavily affected by terrorist attacks carried out by Islamist fighters linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
