August 18, 2021 Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said that if he did not leave Afghanistan "he would be executed" on the basis of a secret plan.

Ghani said in a Facebook video message that on Sunday, as he was on his way to the Defense Ministry to check Kabul's security plans, his protection team assigned to his personal security "was foiling a grand plot."

"If I had not left the country, once again the Afghan president would have been executed before the eyes of the people."

"Although the Taliban had pledged not to enter Kabul, they had approached the presidential palace," Ghani added. "I was not afraid of death but I was forced to leave to avoid bloodshed in the city and to protect Kabul from destruction."

Confirming his presence in the UAE, the former president said events unfolded quickly and that he "wanted to negotiate an inclusive government with the Taliban", but he could not. Ghani expressed support for former President Hamid Karzai's negotiations with the Taliban, and said he was proud of the Afghan forces.

Ghani evoked the intention to return to Afghanistan and added that "in the past, many Afghan rulers left Afghanistan in time of need and then returned".
