Four people were rescued following the incident, a local police spokesperson said.

Helpers do not know if other people are still missing.

Witnesses said several people were standing on a wooden bridge over the Höllentalklamm when it collapsed, but versions differ on their exact number.

Popular tourist destination, the Höllentalklamm is a narrow gorge near the town of Grainau in southern Germany.
