Nigeria once again mourns the many victims of a road accident.

On Sunday, in the north of the country, 21 people were killed in a traffic accident involving a bus and truck, police said.

The tragedy occurred around 6 a.m. in Radabi village, Jigawa state.

A bus and a truck "fell into a broken pipe filled with water," police spokesman Lawan Shiisu said in a statement.

Recent floods

Road accidents are common in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and main economy, the most common causes being reckless driving, overloading vehicles and poor roads.

The state of the road network has been worsened in recent weeks by numerous storms and floods.
