The death toll from the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in the Caribbean Sea is rapidly increasing.

Haiti's disaster authority, Civil Protection Bureau, said on the 15th local time that the death toll from the earthquake that occurred the day before has risen to 1,297.

More than 5,700 people were injured and there are many missing, so there is concern that the loss of life will increase further.

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred in Haiti about 8:29 a.m. on the 14th, 13.5 km southeast of Petitrudnif.

It is located 125 km west of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and the depth of the epicenter is as shallow as 10 km, so strong vibrations were detected not only in Haiti but also in neighboring countries.

In addition, strong aftershocks of magnitude 4-5 continued until the next day.

To make matters worse, according to the US National Hurricane Center, Grace, weakened from a tropical storm to a tropical cyclone, is expected to affect Haiti from the afternoon of the 16th.

In Haiti, one of the poorest countries with a poverty rate of 60%, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake near Port-au-Prince in 2010 killed up to 300,000 people.
