Yesterday, the evacuation of Swedish embassy staff in Afghanistan began.

That after the United States decided to withdraw its security forces from the so-called green zone in Kabul, where foreign embassy staff operate.

According to Foreign Minister Ann Linde, the decision came from the United States unexpectedly.

- Both our staff and our Nordic neighbors thought we would have this week on us.

Then came this quick decision, she says in SVT's Morgonstudion.

"Not just taking people out"

The evacuation work has been fraught with several difficulties, says Linde.

Among other things, the local embassy staff must obtain permission from the Afghan authorities before they can leave the country.

- They can be stopped because it becomes dangerous, because they can not enter the airport or because all flights are stopped.

It's not just about taking people out, she says.

The stop of commercial flights from Kabul Airport could delay the evacuation further, says Ann Linde to Sverige Radio.

- It was thought that you would already have a full flight with local employees and families tomorrow, but now we will see, says Linde in P1 Morgon.

Ann Linde does not want to comment on where the Swedish embassy staff is right now.
