August 14, 2021 The US Department of Homeland Security issued a terrorism alert citing potential threats from outside and inside the United States and mentioning the risk of "targeted violence" on the twentieth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks and of upcoming religious holidays. DHS did not cite any specific threats, but noted that the United States finds itself in an "environment of heightened threat," fueled by factors including violent extremists motivated by racial and ethnic hatred and resentment of restrictions imposed during the pandemic.

The bulletin also reads how al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula recently published the first English copy of its 'Inspire' magazine after four years, demonstrating how international terrorist organizations continue their efforts to recruit extremists in the US. The anniversary and approaching holidays "could serve as a catalyst for acts of targeted violence," DHS said.
