Trump blames Biden for Taliban progress in Afghanistan

On Thursday, former US President Donald Trump blamed his successor, Joe Biden, for the military progress of the Taliban in Afghanistan, saying that the current situation was "unacceptable".

"If I were president now, the world would know that our withdrawal from Afghanistan is conditional," Trump said in a statement.

"The withdrawal could have been different and more successful, and the Taliban knew that better than anyone else," he added.

"I have personally talked to Taliban leaders and they understand that what they are doing today will not be acceptable," he said.

On Thursday, the Taliban took control of the strategic city of Ghazni, 150 km southwest of Kabul, and began to move dangerously close to the Afghan capital after seizing most of the northern part of the country within days.

On Thursday, the movement took control of Herat, the third city of Afghanistan (west), in what is considered a major stage in its offensive after seizing the strategic city of Ghazni.

Donald Trump, who lost the November 2020 election but remains influential within the Republican Party, did not specify how he would have prevented the insurgents from advancing.

Under his administration, on February 29, 2020, the United States signed an agreement with the Taliban, in which Washington pledged to withdraw all American forces from Afghanistan before May 1, 2021.

In return, the Taliban pledged to enter into peace negotiations with the Afghan government, to refrain from attacking US forces and their interests in Afghanistan, and to sever ties with Al-Qaeda.

After signing this agreement, the Trump administration reduced the US military presence in Afghanistan and pledged to meet the deadline for a full withdrawal from it.
