11 August 2021 Off the coast of Grado tomorrow, 12 August, the operations of the first of the three pilot interventions of the "UnderWaterMuse" project approved and financed under the Cross-border Cooperation Program - Interreg Italy-Croatia 2014 - 2020.

The objective of the interventions is the protection and enhancement of the wreck of a Roman boat known as "Grade 2", which is located at a depth of 19 meters, covered by a few centimeters of sandy bottom.

Discovered in March 2020, the wreck was the subject, in the same year, of an initial investigation by the Superintendency with a team of the University of Catania. The amphorae of the cargo belong, according to the intact and fragmentary specimens recovered, to a family of containers used for the transport of wine and known as "ancient Greco-Italic amphorae", produced between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC in southern Tuscany, Lazio, southern Italy , Sicily and on the Adriatic side of the peninsula.

It would be the oldest cargo of amphorae in the north-central Adriatic, prior to the foundation of the colony of Aquileia (181 BC)

This first intervention involves the removal of the eight already positioned grids, bringing to light the entire field and documenting it accurately. The existing grids will be repositioned and others will be added to cover it completely, thus ensuring its protection and accessibility by divers.

The project is led by the Regional Body for Cultural Heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia in partnership with the University of Venice Ca 'Foscari, the Puglia Region, the Rera - Spalato agency and the Municipality of Kaštela.
