Marriage registration increased by 287,000 pairs in the first half of the year

In the first half of the year, the number of registered marriages nationwide was 4.166 million, an increase of 287,000 pairs compared with the data for the same period in 2020.

However, compared with the data of the same period in 2019, it has decreased by 814,000 pairs.

Li Yue, an associate researcher of the China Population and Development Research Center, pointed out in an interview with reporters from China-Singapore Jingwei that the increase in the number of marriages this year compared to 2020 is an episode caused by the outbreak of the new crown pneumonia epidemic.

At the beginning of the Spring Festival in 2020, in response to the sudden epidemic, strict epidemic prevention and control measures such as home isolation, social distancing, and prohibition of gatherings have been generally adopted in various places. These measures directly affected marriage registration, weddings, etc., so many people chose to postpone marry.

When talking about the decrease in the number of marriage pairs in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2019, Li Yue believes that the main reason is the reduction in the size of the marriage and childbearing age population, and the impact of factors such as delayed marriages of young people.

Ying Xiwen, a senior researcher at the China Minbank Think Tank, pointed out to a reporter from China-Singapore Jingwei that the decrease in the number of marriage pairs in the first half of this year compared with the same period in 2019 is consistent with the general decline in the marriage rate in my country in recent years. The decline in the marriage-age population is caused by two aspects.

Number of Marriage Registration Pairs TOP3: Yu, Yue, and Sichuan are at the forefront

In the first half of the year, there were over 200,000 marriage registrations in 6 provinces, and over 100,000 marriages in 19 provinces.

Specifically, Henan topped the list with 340,000 pairs of marriage registrations, and Henan was also the only province with more than 300,000 marriage registrations; Guangdong was followed by 294,000 pairs; Sichuan ranked third with 293,000 pairs.

Comparing the data, it is found that the provinces in the second place for marriage registration are only 10 thousand more than the provinces in the second place, and the gap is relatively small.

Li Yue said that the number of marriage pairs in each province is closely related to the total population size. Guangdong Province ranks first in the country in terms of total population size, while Henan and Sichuan rank third and fifth respectively, so the number of marriage pairs in these provinces will also be higher.

It will also be affected by many factors such as the age structure of the population in each province, population migration and social and economic development, so we see that the ranking of the marriage logarithm does not strictly correspond to the ranking of the total population of each province.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs will carry out a trial of marriage customs reform

On July 21, at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office, Zhang Zhende, head of the Department of Social Affairs of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, said that the Ministry of Civil Affairs will carry out a trial of marriage customs reform and organize group weddings.

Actively promote all localities to oppose the sky-high price of the lottery, resist extravagance and waste, and make a big deal as an important content of the village regulations and the residents' pact.

Li Yue suggested that curbing bad habits such as high-priced beauties is a systematic project that requires multiple parties to work together to cope with it.

First, we must strengthen publicity and advocacy, and eliminate the idea of considering marriage from economic value.

Second, it is necessary to strengthen the construction of the old-age security mechanism and social security system in rural areas, improve the public service system, ease the worries of married women, and increase support for economically underdeveloped rural areas.

Li Yue also said that it is possible to explore the introduction of a certificate-issuing ceremony in the marriage registration link to enhance the solemnity and sense of ceremony in receiving a marriage certificate.

Advocate the holding of collective weddings and create a new fashion of civilized and thrifty marriage customs.
