Chinanews.com, August 10th. According to the US Chinese website, the USCIS announced on Monday (9th) a new policy that will allow immigrants applying for permanent residents (green cards) to apply for Social Security numbers at the same time.

Previously, new immigrants could only apply for a social security number from the Social Security Bureau.

Now, the Immigration Department has updated I-485, the form for adjustment of status, adding more questions.

New immigrants can apply for a social security number by filling in the form.

The Immigration Bureau pointed out that after approving the I-485 application, in most cases it will directly send the electronic data to the Social Security Bureau.

After that, the Social Security Bureau will automatically assign a new social security number or reissue a social security card.

In addition, after adding this function, the cost of I-485 remains unchanged.

Applicants can fill out the new form from Monday (9th).

According to data from the Immigration Bureau, 576,000 people file I-485 applications each year.

The Director of the Immigration Service stated that this expanded cooperation between the Immigration Service and the Social Security Administration is one of the ways to make the U.S. immigration system more efficient and save applicants' time.
