Doctors at Rashid Hospital were able to restore a completely amputated leg to a citizen child (11 years), through a complex surgery that took seven hours under general anesthesia, during which the bone was cleaned and fixed and the veins and arteries were connected using a surgical microscope.

The patient had arrived at the Injury and Emergency Center at Rashid Hospital, after he was involved in a collision in the sea between two water bikes, which led to the amputation of his entire right leg from below the knee, and the doctors began conducting the necessary examinations and transferring him to the operating room, to return the leg to its place as quickly as possible, in order to avoid any possible complications.

A medical team participated in the operation, including: Consultant and Head of Hand Surgery Department and Head of Surgery Departments, Dr. Khaled Al-Awadi, Consultant Hand, Microscopic and Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Hamed Badawy, Specialist in Hand, Microscopic and Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Mohamed Fathi Saidam, and Consultant Anesthesia, Dr. Osama Sami Al-Ani, and anesthesiologist, Dr. Ihab Shalaby.

The Intensive Care Department followed up the patient in the intensive care unit, which played a major role in improving blood circulation and fluids that the patient had lost as a result of the injury.

Al-Awadi said: "The medical team cleaned the place of injury, including veins and arteries, bone stabilization and arterial conduction, after grafting the damaged ones using a surgical microscope, which is one of the best techniques for this type of delicate and complex surgery," noting the complete success that culminated in it. The operation, in which the leg was returned to its place, and the blood flow in the veins and arteries was ensured normally.

He added that "the medical team, five days after the operation, grafted the wound with a skin patch from the other thigh, to completely cover the place of injury," stressing that "the patient is currently in a period of convalescence and medical rehabilitation that may reach a period of up to a year, during which he needs continuous follow-up and physical therapy to restore normal functions to the leg».

He pointed to the seriousness of this type of injury that requires urgent medical intervention, in light of the low success rates of foot amputations in general, explaining that “returning amputated limbs is one of the most difficult and complex surgeries, because it requires reconnecting nerves, arteries and tissues, which are not Some of them can be seen with the naked eye, and they are dealt with through microscopes, and they require great skill and speed from doctors inside the operating room.”

The father of the child, Ahmed Rashid Al Dhaheri, said that his son, who was involved in the accident two weeks ago, while practicing water sports in the Mamzar Sea in Dubai, his condition began to improve and recover, after performing a rare surgical operation by the medical team at Rashid Hospital, and he is still under follow-up and close medical supervision. In intensive care.

He stated that Ahmed is 11 years old, and he is scheduled to join the sixth grade next school year, and he loves to practice water bikes, but he was surprised by another bike that crossed his path and clashed with him, which led to the complete amputation of one of his feet.

Al-Zaher thanked the medical team at Rashid Hospital for their efforts and superior ability that led to the restoration of his son's amputated foot and his rescue, expressing his great happiness at the presence of these competencies and medical capabilities in the country.
