On Monday, another country on the Mediterranean was hit by forest fires.

It is currently burning in 13 of Algeria's provinces, according to the news agency TT.

At least 31 people have died in the fires in the province of Tizi Ouzou, 100 kilometers east of the capital Algeria.

18 of them died while fighting the flames.

The remaining six are civilians.

Several people have been forced to flee their homes to escape the fires that the country's interior minister Kamel Beldjoud suspects have been started.

"Only criminals can be behind the fact that about fifty fires break out simultaneously in several places in the province," he told Algerian television according to the news agency TT.
