From 9 August, all residents born in 2005 or earlier will be vaccinated.

And the interest has been great - already on Monday morning, a quarter of the age group had booked an appointment.

- There are new times for vaccination all the time so you just have to keep an eye out, says Malin Bengnér, infection control doctor.

"I do not want to get sick from the vaccine"

Although many young people want to get vaccinated, there are also those who are afraid of suffering more severe side effects.

Shiyu Yang is 16 years old and does not feel ready for vaccination yet.

Since the Public Health Agency previously recommended that only those aged 18 and older should be vaccinated, Shiyu Yang wants to wait to see how the vaccination of 16-17-year-olds goes.

- I want to keep a little track of whether it is one hundred percent safe, I do not want to get sick, he says.

Watch Shiyu Yang tell us more about how he reasons in the clip above.

Malin Bengnér, an infection control doctor, says that many young people in Jönköping County are generally positive about vaccines.

- I think most young people are interested and are often quite well-read while others want more information, but this particular group is quite positive, she says.

Information letter and consent form sent

In order for people under the age of 18 to be vaccinated, consent from a guardian is required in the first instance.

But if the person is judged to have reached sufficient maturity to make a decision about vaccination, it is also an alternative, according to Region Jönköping County.

How should healthcare professionals control maturity among young people?

All residents born in 2005 and earlier will receive a consent form and information letter sent home during week 31.

How important is it for this group to get vaccinated?

- It is important.

The high school students have been hit hard by the pandemic, not least by the indirect effects of school closures, so it feels good to be able to offer protection before this school year, says Malin Bengnér.
