Merapi volcano spews hot clouds in Indonesia

The Geological Agency of Indonesia announced today that Mount Merapi on the island of Java erupted this morning, spewing hot, fast-moving clouds.

The National Geological Agency said a mixture of hot lava, ash and gases known as lava flows moved 2,000 meters down the south-west slope of the volcano.

The warning level for the volcano remains at the second highest level, which is the level of warning that has been issued since the volcano began to erupt intermittently last November.

The last deadly eruption of the volcano was in 2010, which killed more than 340 people and displaced 60,000 others.

It is noteworthy that Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for seismic activity, and has about 128 active volcanoes.
