Tribune Remember the pardons
"A call to the third chamber of the
Supreme Court
, a political interference in the judiciary and an attack against the division of powers."
The Deputy Secretary General for
Citizens
, Edmundo Bal, could not be more forceful yesterday when interpreting the words of the Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, who considers
"quite unlikely"
that the Supreme Court will
estimate the resources
of various parties, including Cs, and annul the pardons of the procés.
The head of Justice said in an interview with El País that she does not know what the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the Supreme Court is going to do but said that "it is quite unlikely that this will happen from a legal point of view."
For Edmundo Bal, that is
"trying to influence" the Supreme Court
to issue a judgment rejecting the contentious-administrative appeals filed against the politicians convicted by the trial of the procés.
The deputy secretary general of Cs made a recommendation to the minister: "Do not exhaust yourself with these statements, the Supreme Court will judge you with authentic independence, as the judiciary always does, which is the containment dam against separatism."
For this reason, the person in charge of Cs
assured to trust that the appeals are not dismissed
"and these people go back to jail, from where they never leave again."
It was not the only criticism received by the head of Justice.
The secretary of Justice and Interior of the PP,
Enrique López
, affirmed that the Government of Pedro Sánchez "must think about the independence of the judges and not about political emergencies." He also referred to the requests made by Pilar Llop yesterday in Asturias for the PP to have "high sights" to
renew the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ)
and "thus avoid many dysfunctions in the ordinary work of the courts and tribunals that negatively impact citizens ".
López: "What the socialist government and the Minister of Justice have to do is read what Europe is asking for: the renewal of the CGPJ, but, at the same time, that we work on an imminent reform that allows members of the Judiciary to be
elected directly by the judges
. The Government has to abandon this obsession against the Judiciary. "
The concerns of the political opposition about the government's pressure on the judiciary coincide with those of many jurists, among them the former attorney general of the State
Consuelo Madrigal
, who on Sunday said in EL MUNDO: "That the executive branch wants to control the judiciary is clear, that it has long undermined its independence is also a fact. What is unparalleled is such a statement. "
Madrigal was referring to the first public appearance of Pilar Llop, an address without concession to questions, in which he openly questioned the sentence that declared some aspects of the State of Alarm decree unconstitutional.
