Last year, the Swedish state gave around one billion kronor and in April the government decided to continue at the same level.

Since 2013, Afghanistan has been the largest recipient country for Swedish development assistance.

But now aid can be reconsidered if the Taliban take over power, writes Dagens Nyheter.

- We must be prepared for different scenarios.

Whether it is a Taliban takeover, a development where the government manages to keep cities and the Taliban control the countryside, or a breakdown with civil war between different groups, says Göran Holmqvist, head of Sida's department for Asia, the Middle East and humanitarian aid, to the newspaper.

Foreign Ministry: Leave Afghanistan now

Since 10 February 2006, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs has advised against all travel to Afghanistan.

As a result of further deterioration in the security situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls on all Swedes who are in Afghanistan to leave the country as of 5 August 2021.

The British Foreign Office has also asked its citizens to leave Afghanistan, and also warns of a high risk of terrorist attacks.
