• Ibiza Islands: what attracted Escohotado and Franco's lesbian relative

  • Lifestyle The Ibiza pandemic: this is how the empire of the night has collapsed

Ibiza, summer 2019. Pachá, Amnesia, Ushuaia and Privilege among other nightlife venues were preparing to reap the fruits of tourism that came on pilgrimage to the music temples of the Balearic island.

Two summers after the last one that was really good, Ibiza tries to

keep up with the club lights off.

Although the island is one of the destinations with the lowest drop in visitors compared to 2019, Ibiza has stopped billing the 500 million euros per season that nightlife provided. The scourge of the health crisis has pushed this sector to adapt or seek alternatives. This is the case of David de las Heras, formerly of Kapital Madrid and current CEO of Roto Ibiza, one of the most attractive places on the island where Feliciano López, Pirlo, María Pombo and Estela Grande have already paraded among other faces. known. "Given the restrictions and the low viability that discotheques have at the moment,

the best option was to plan a restaurant with drinks,"

says De las Heras.

The Roto project, which David has now joined, began three years ago with Miguel Sancho, Andrés García-Prado and Jorge Brazález, winner of the fifth edition of MasterChef, at the controls.

His proposal is to exploit the strip of the so-called "tardy" and enhance the gastronomic part of the restaurant.

"We have tried to create the concept of 'dancing seated'. You can enjoy a good dinner with friends and also have a drink complying with all the security measures," he says.

On the other hand, the main attraction of Roto is the location.

"We are in the five-star port Marina Ibiza.

The boats are at the door of Roto. It is an area of breakwaters where customers come to watch the sunset. It is a privilege," he adds.

In addition to remembering the sunset, Roto's goal is to also pay attention to food. "We have hired a new hospitality manager, Naza Trujillo, who previously worked at Lío Ibiza and Víctor Martínez is the executive chef who previously ran the Pachá restaurant. Jorge Brazález also contributes his two cents.

The menu focuses on the island's raw material ".

Restrictions in Ibiza have made it difficult to adapt to changing measures. "The de-escalation has been a bit harsh. The closing time has been changing until they let us open until 2 in the morning. Right now they have reduced it to 1.

We have to readjust quickly.

We have 78 workers in the It's not easy for them either. They come from a pandemic and the season has been shortened to a month. "

As the island government uses undercover detectives to intercept illegal parties, David thinks support for the nightlife sector should have been stronger.

"Nightlife has always been demonized and now more. But it was the way to meet your partner, meet your friends and enjoy music. They have banned it and that has led to illegal parties.

People only get fear and worry and he needs a little truce. "

Another of Roto's curiosities is that it allows you to pay with cryptocurrencies.

Thus, large (or small) fortunes of bitcoins, ethers, etc. can pay for their drinks through this system,

something that attracts the international customer above all.

The island's hospitality and nightlife sector is reinventing itself and with it, so are its professionals. DJs, absolute stars of nightclubs, have also had to adapt to this new situation. Their figures have plummeted, billing in a year what they could previously do in one night. Sebastián Gamboa, one of the most popular DJs on the island, especially in Lío and Pachá, acknowledges that his turnover has dropped by 98%. Luckily, he has another project underway that allows him to remain linked to music. After 30 years in the profession and having created Vintage, the quintessential Ibizan party, he is now at the helm of Ibiza Songs.

"We design musical content for hotels, restaurants, gyms, shops ...

First we do a study of the brand and then we adapt the music ", he explains. Together with his partners, he is the architect of Roto's musical content and its market extends to the US, the Caribbean, the Middle East and all of Europe. Before it was mixed with the crowd and tried to capture their mood to put one or another song. His task has changed: "I find it more difficult to do what I do now than is to think a remote and predicted musical content."

Sebastián confesses that he soon assimilated that his return to the nightclubs was not going to be quick.

"There is no use complaining.

Many people ask me when we are going to return to Lío. Nobody knows," he

says.
