The chairman of the main party of the conservative coalition in power in Poland, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, announced on Saturday

that they will withdraw a disciplinary measure from his controversial justice reform

, something that the EU demanded. "We will abolish the Disciplinary Chamber in the form it currently has, so the object of litigation disappears," declared the president of Law and Justice (PiS), and

deputy prime minister in charge of national security

, in an interview for the agency of Polish PAP news.

On July 14, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ordered Poland to immediately cease the activities of this disciplinary chamber of its Supreme Court, an institution that became operational in February

as part of its reform of the system of justice

.

The Disciplinary Chamber is responsible for monitoring judges, and

can remove their immunity to face criminal charges or reduce their salaries

.

The CJEU considered that this chamber did not provide "all the guarantees of impartiality and independence" and that "it was not protected from direct or indirect influence of the legislative and executive power."

The European Commission gave Warsaw until August 16 to commit to respecting the CJEU decisions, under threat of financial sanctions.

"This does not mean that the Chamber will disappear, ...

but it will be a completely different body

," Kaczynski said.

This decision, however, could be obstructed by Zbigniew Ziobro, Minister of Justice, author of the reform and president of one of the three parties of the coalition in power.

Ziobro stated on Friday that he "categorically refused to give in to unlawful blackmail" by the EU.

The EU and Poland have had a tense relationship for years due to the reforms adopted by the conservative nationalist government of the Law and Justice party.
