Health passes to go to cafes, restaurants, go on long journeys and in some cases even to visit hospitals.

It will be mandatory for the French people from Monday, despite weeks of massive protests.

The passport has previously been mandatory for those who want to go to a museum, cinema or visit a swimming pool, but now the requirements are being expanded.

On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in France again to demonstrate against the government's covid laws.

- The problem with the health pass is that it is forced, says the protester Alexandre Fourez, to France 24.

"Will need QR codes for everything"

The demonstrations take place two days after the French Constitutional Council approved most of the provisions of the new law on health passports, also known as covidpasses by the EU.

It is not the only demonstration against the government.

In July, the first was held and has since continued for four Saturdays in a row.

The starting point for the protests is restrictions on one's own freedom and that vaccination will in principle be mandatory.

- Everyone should be able to decide freely, not because of laws.

Soon we will need QR codes for everything in life, says protester Julien Bailly, to France 24.

40,000 more protesters

An Interior Ministry official told Reuters that more than 204,000 people took part in Saturday's protests around the country, which is about 40,000 more than last weekend.

It is already the law that all healthcare staff must be vaccinated before 15 September, otherwise they will have their salary deducted.

A clear majority, about 76 percent of French people, support President Emmanuel Macron's methods with the vaccine requirement, according to a survey by the television channel BFM earlier in July.
