It is the third largest fire in recent California history.

And its progression could continue, according to scientists.

The gusts expected in the coming days could stoke the fire, according to the authorities.

More than 5,000 firefighters are mobilized to fight the flames.

These violent gales in addition to very dry vegetation and complicated terrain make their efforts very difficult.

This Wednesday, the fire destroyed the historic town of

Greenville

.

On local media videos, the city is totally unrecognizable.

Homes and cars were engulfed in flames, leaving this city of 800 people reduced to ashes.

Although fires are common in California, they are becoming more and more devastating each year.

The prolonged drought associated with climate change has made the western United States vulnerable to large-scale wildfires.

Seven of the largest fires in California history, including the Dixie Fire, have occurred in the past three years alone.

The #DixieFire in California has now grown to over 110,000 hectares.
